U.S. Open Cycling Championships

Saturday, April 7

Downtown (see website for course maps), free for spectators, 10:30 a.m. – noon.

This is a professional cycling event and America’s newest International sporting event. The race will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports from 10:30 a.m. – noon. The U.S. Open features a spectator- friendly circuit race in downtown Richmond for professional and elite amateur women and a men’s point-to-point road race from historic Williamsburg to Richmond for invited domestic and international professional teams. The event is part of the USA Cycling Pro Tour, a collection of elite international competitions throughout the United States, and is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Martinis for Mutts

Element Lounge, 119 N. 18th Street, $10 donation, 6 – 9 p.m.

Cheap martinis all night, light buffet, a raffle and silent auction. Great music, mingling and merriment all for a good cause! There is a $10 donation at the door that benefits AARF (Animal Adoption Rescue Foundation). For more information call (804) 327-9948 or www.aarf.org.

Earth Day Celebration, Fish Festival and 3rd Annual Mayor’s Walk and Roll

Saturday, April 21

South side of the Mayo Bridge (14th Street) at the James River and Flood Wall, free admission, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This event will celebrate the renewed health of the James River and encourage Richmonders to get out of their cars and use muscle power to bike, canoe, kayak, walk or roll to this family fun event. Enjoy food, art, dance, exhibits, earth-friendly goods and plenty of kid’s activities! Live music by Greg Allen (Gasping At Laws), Chris Wright, Broken Arrow with Chris Branch, The Whitlocks, Gordy Gordon, The Delvers, Melissa Cartwright, Floating Rock Band, Pam McCarthy, Farm Vegas, EL (Jay Ellis), Craig Caldwell, The Socials, Cary Jackson, Mark Arnold & Friends, Ricky Allen, Mozely Rose, and The Orderlies. Walking Tour of Shockoe Bottom

Meet at the corner of 17th and East Main Streets, $10 fee, $9 in advance, $5 for History Center members, 2 – 4 p.m.

Shockoe Bottom is Richmond’s ”hot, new“ entertainment and residential district, but for centuries it was the center of commerce. Come explore this revitalized area of the city, including Main Street Station. For more information call (804) 649-0711, option 4.
