Venture Richmond Announces Holiday Card Winners
Four area high schools have been chosen winners in Venture Richmond's Annual Holiday Card program. This year's cards will be on display beginning Friday, Dec. 4, during the Grand Illumination at the Downtown Public Library on Franklin Street. They will stay on display through the end of the month.
In the four categories identified by the judging committee the following schools were selected as the best representation of the criteria:
Holiday Wishes: Open High School
Most Universal: St. Catherine's School
Most "Green": Huguenot High School
Most Magical: Henrico High School's Center for the Arts
Each of the four winning schools will receive a $350 cash prize to benefit their Art Department and all schools will receive a Ukrop's Pizza party for their participating students. Lissy Bryan acts as chairperson for the annual project. All High Schools in the Richmond Region are welcome to participate in the program, which was initiated in 2003. The "cards"are actually giant works of art produced on the front and back of two, full-sized doors which are hinged together to form a giant greeting card. Schools are provided with doors and materials. This year, for the first time, doors were "recycled"from previous years and cash prizes were awarded.
Participating high schools in 2009 were: John Marshall, Open, St. Catherine's Clover Hill, George Wythe, Henrico, Mills Godwin and Huguenot, Armstrong and Lee Davis.
Venture Richmond continues to store many of the previous years' cards and this year those cards will be displayed at CenterStage, the Visitors Center at the Greater Richmond Convention Center and Main Street Station, also during the month of December.
Sponsors for the program are First Market Bank, Page Bond Gallery and Siewers Lumber and Millwork.
