100% Fully Accredited City Schools Reach Historic Achievement Levels

For the first time since the state began its Standards of Learning (SOLs) testing program, every Richmond City school has earned full accreditation based on achievement standards in English, mathematics, history and science. The results, announced today by School Superintendent Dr. Yvonne Brandon, signal a remarkable pattern of achievement by the city school district, according to school officials.

"I am so proud to serve as superintendent of a school district that has demonstrated such growth in student achievement in the past few years," said Dr. Brandon. "In 2002-2003, just eight years ago, only 19 percent of our schools were fully accredited. Today, that number stands at 100 percent. Without question, our latest SOL scores demonstrate that Richmond Public Schools has delivered on its promise to provide a world-class education for all students. The report is truly a testament to the district's outstanding teachers, hard-working students and dedicated parents. It's a shared accomplishment of which we can all be proud."

To be fully accredited, middle and high schools must have a pass rate of at least 70 percent in all four subject areas. Elementary schools must achieve a combined pass rate of at least 75 percent on English tests for students in grades three through five; a pass rate of at least 70 percent in mathematics, fifth-grade science and fifth-grade history; and a pass rate of at least 50 percent in third-grade science and history.
