Civil War and Emancipation Day

9:30am until 5:00pm
This Saturday the 16th is Civil war and emancipation day here in Richmond. This is a free event commemorating the 150th anniversaries of the Civil War and the end of American slavery. The day includes free admission to over 20 museums and coordinating institutions throughout Richmond. Opening remarks begin at Historic Tredegar at 9:30.

City to Host Hoopstown Celebration
for VCU and UR

Mayor Dwight C. Jones is asking Richmonders and fans of both Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond to come out and show thanks and support at a city-wide Hoopstown Celebration for both school's basketball programs. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 12 at 4 p.m. downtown at the James Center on Cary Street.

The VCU Rams made history this season with the program's first-ever Final Four appearance. Further, VCU Coach Shaka Smart was named the State Coach of the Year and senior Jamie Skeen was named to the 2011 Men's Final Four All-tournament team.

The Richmond Spiders won the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship and made their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance reaching the Sweet 16. The Spiders have ranked in the top 25 for two years straight.

VCU Coach Shaka Smart and UR Coach Chris Mooney will be at the rally along with the team members from both schools and the athletic directors.
